SOLO DECLARATION FOR SAFEGUARDING AND PROTECTING HERITAGE |

WHC conference in 2008 or the second day of the last session held Tuesday 28 October 2008 at Sunan Hotel.Conference produce a final declaration read by the Mayor of Surakarta, Ir. Joko Widodo, and signed by representatives of the city Member Euro-Asian World Heritage Cities in 2008. In the declaration the participants recognized some things, namely the cultural diversity and multi-cultural understanding, which is the basis for creating a harmonious world and will provide a significant contribution to reducing tensions and resolving conflicts in the world. In addition to the totality of human values, creative mind and the works, is also a cultural power base to form the future must be developed. Culture should be, because of the cultural heritage can provide inspiration and motivation is also the economic potential for further development of culture. The development of the city that is increasingly complex should still consider the balance with the permanent conserving, caring and utilize the cultural heritage as an asset, although exactly have the values of physical, economic, social and cultural significance. From the statement, the participants and expressed support for calls and 9 case, namely: 1. The importance of balancing the physical, economic, social, cultural and sustainable development, by utilizing the experience and lessons of the past, and the dynamics of a growing challenge to answer the present and future;
2. The need to safeguard and protect cultural properties and develop the cultural life of harmony, forming a typical image of the city, and encourage a vibrant cultural life in various societies. Policy clear strategy, and implementation of the program should be developed in each city;
3. The need to utilize the wisdom and lessons learned from that heritage to improve the quality of life and welfare of the people, and to strengthen the basic creative and sustainable development;
4. The importance of improving cooperation between cities so that the consolidation efforts in maintaining and developing the cities heritage productive and dynamic, based on the understanding between people, between cities and between countries;
5. The need to develop sustainable tourism that will provide economic benefits, increase inter-cultural understanding, strengthen the values of tolerance, freedom and democracy, and also as a powerful media education to learn about the environment and heritage;
6. The desire to improve public understanding and appreciation of history and culture in education through formal and non-formal, in the mass media and in various activities in daily life and the need to encourage and facilitate community initiatives in various heritage conservation movement;
7. The importance of efforts at local, national, regional and international protect, preserve and revitalize the culture and traditional knowledge. For it is very urgent to accelerate the establishment of an international instrument that has been discussed under the auspices of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and leveraging the power of social culture, to support these efforts and prevent the abuse of cultural assets.
8. The award for the efforts of UNESCO in the establishment of the Representative List of Cultural Heritage and Human Items Items not currently have urgent. Along with that, considering the value attached to the gamelan and batik, and the cultural heritage objects countries, efforts are needed to accelerate the process of recording the heritage of the it into the list;
9. The urgency to formulate and develop technical cooperation program, database, information, communication, and education and readiness of disaster response and management of the impact of the disaster.

SOLONESE ENTHUSIASM SURPRISE WHCCE PARTICIPANTS |

27 October 2008 : 5 p.m. Hundred of thousands Solonese who attend to World Heritage Carnival caught the attention of the WHCCE delegacies and participants. They didn’t actually expect that thousand of people will watch the carnival on Slamet Riyadi Street. The carnival begins from Solo City Hall through the main road of Solo for about 3 km length. The estimated people who watch the carnival is about 300.000. “Magnificent! It’s a very fenomenal carnival.” says Rassikh Sagitov, Secretary General Euro-Asia United Cities & Local Governments (UCLG) on Monday (27/10)The same admirations are also delivered by most of delegacies, guests, and participants. They say that this fenomena will be the best impression to be told to their collegues. A lot of delegacies and participants hunt for the documentation of the carnival. “Today, a lot of people ask for the Carnival’s Documentation. Most of them are foreigners,“ says Andry Prasetyo Media Center Photo Servive Coordinator. According to Laretna T Adishakti from Heritage Conservation Center of Gajah Mada University (UGM), the Solonese enthusiasm to watch the carnival in a valuable assets fro Solo. One of the conference’s speakers also mentioned that Solonese apreciation toward the Carnival will be a great tourism assets |

BOROBUDUR, ONE OF THE WORLD’S MASTERPIECE |

26 Oktober 2008 – 13.30 WIB.4th WHCCE 2008 Field Trip was held on Sunday (26/10). Heritage sites visited are Borobudur Temple in Magelang, Central Java and Prambanan Temple in Klaten, Central Java. Participants, guests and press are accomodated by 15 international standard buses with 28 seats of capacity and escorted by 4 cars. The first is police escort car. Other are Department of Health of Solo and Satpol PP cars. Among the 15 buses, 2 buses are used as backup buses. The field trip participants departed at 7.15 am. Mufti Raharjo, WHCCE 2008 Manager Fieldtrip, says that all foreign delegations agree that Borobudur Temple on Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia is one of the world masterpiece. |
